I'm not an expert by far, but I'll tell you what I've learned.
I use an old version of Photoshop, mostly, but I've heard Gimp is free and pretty good.
The important thing about text is to NOT save your icon as a .jpg - it pixilates the text and makes it look all blurry. I use .png, or .gif if it's animated. You can use .gif even without animation, and I think it's still better than .jpg.
The important thing is just to practice, practice, practice! I think I've gotten a lot better just by joining a lot of icontest communities and seeing what other people do.
Oh, and also, those are beautiful textures!
I can totally see them as a background to some great quotes. If only I could think of some...

Ooh! That is cool :D I don't mind at all - as I said, go ahead and use it if it can be of any use ^^ And obviously, it can ^^ *snatches icons*
